Saorlaith Nic Cionna is a TY student in Coláiste Oiriall, Monaghan. She is a fluent Irish speaker and has a great love for her language, having won numerous awards in debating and public speaking at a national level through Irish.
Like her fellow Monaghan native Patrick Kavanagh, she has a deep love of poetry and its commentey on life. Her performance and interpretation of poetry has led her to being both the Intermediate Champion in Poetry Aloud 2024, and the Intermediate Champion in Guth na hÉigise 2025.
Saorlaith has recited poetry at various events both locally and nationally. Most recently she participated in the 30th anniversary commeration of Seamus Heaney’s Nobel Prize in the National Library of Ireland.
Her other passion is playing traditional Irish fiddle. She has played as part of the Nós Nua orchestra at Fleadh Ceoil na hÉireann and with the Cross Border Youth Folk orchestra in the Ulster Hall. At the Women in STEM Summit she will recite “Ceist na Cuntaoise” by Áine Ní Ghloinn.
