Emma Quigley is an undergraduate civil engineering student studying towards a bachelor of engineering degree at Nottingham University, UK. She also has albinism, a condition which causes photo sensitivity and severe sight impairment. She is the first severely sight impaired student to study civil engineering at Nottingham University and has now become a disability advisor to the University’s engineering department to help improve accessibility for future undergraduates. She particularly enjoys the topics of sustainability, risk management and the science behind weather prediction. Her final dissertation has focused on the genesis of extreme weather events with a view to improving risk management methodologies within the construction industry. Although she has not decided on a definitive post-graduation career path, she is passionate to continue her work to increase inclusivity in the STEM workplace for women with disabilities. She has spent two summer internships working for a management consultancy in London, Innvent Ltd. where she used her civil engineering background to identify areas of innovation within construction companies in order to support their applications for corporate tax incentives. Outside of her academic studies, Emma is a member of the university women’s GAA team and is a keen skier.
